About

Welcome to the home of Justin Thyme. This site is dedicated to my projects with the Quake engine, originally created by id Software. My engine project is called Tremor. In addition to changes to the core engine, I have also added custom graphics and some mild enhancements to the QuakeC code.

When I started getting involved with QuakeC, it quickly became clear that the old tools of Notepad and a command line compiler just didn't stack up favorably to Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0, which I used for engine programming. I initially configured MSVC to handle the project and call the compiler, but it was like using a sledgehammer to push in a thumb tack. QCide is a modification to
SciTE, a programmers text editor, which I have tailored toward QuakeC.  I have also taken all the bug fixes I could find for the original QuakeC 1.06, and done some more clean up work, and have created Clean QuakeC source.  This has also been done for QuakeWorld, Clean QuakeWorld QuakeC v1.64.

With time, my projects have become more varied. In working on Tremor, I realized that many of the tutorials originally written for the Quake engine no longer worked, as most engines have changed so much. So I thought I'd try to create a "tutorial" engine...one which was fairly basic, and would be tutorial friendly. This became the genesis of aRQ-Lite, which has since morphed into simply an engine that is small and fast, working well on older hardware.

I have eventually worked my way up to the world of Quake 2. Although there aren't as many Quake 2 projects going as there are of the original Quake, those that do exist are trying to push the envelope. So once again, a more basic engine seems to be the missing piece. aRQ-Lite2 is similar in spirit to the original aRQ-Lite, but with the Quake 2 engine. For this project, I am working from a slightly more advanced codebase, so although it will be better for lower end machines than many clients out there, raw speed isn't the sole consideration.

Where ever possible, I have received explicit permission to include code, graphics or other content from the original creator.

Due to space restrictions, the source code for all releases may not be posted here on the website, but are available upon request.

Please stop by and check out the Tremor forum, part of QuakeDev's forum system!

Happy Memorial Day! Please take a moment and give thanks to those who put themselves in harms way in order to preserve the way of life we've all become used to!

I have this thing about dealing with Windows. I like to be unique. There are tons of great tools out there to change your boot screens and change the entire interface. Right now, my favorite by far is WinStep Xtreme. It gives you a multitude of options and tweaks, yet doesn't mess with your apps. Some of these updated interfaces may cause certain applications to fail, so check it out carefully.

The way I use WinStep is to clean up my desktop. I removed the Start menu/task list bar completely. The menu can be activated anytime just by clicking on an empty portion of the desktop. I then use a couple of OS X type launch bars for all my most essential apps, and my desktop is completely clear of clutter and icons.

WinStep is very reasonably priced at $39, and with the stability you get with the flexibility, it's well worth the investment!

Well, you've heard it before....but I may have a chance to start working on a little code again. My life situation has changed and I have a fair bit more free time. The tough part will be deciding which project to get back into, or if perhaps a different project all together would be worthwhile.

When I get a chance, I'll take a look to see if anyones been visiting and what they've been looking at, and go from there. I'm half inclined to do a research type project, such as how small can I make the Quake engine, yet still have essential features such as menus and stuff like that.

Yet another fairly unproductive streak. I spent about three 1/2 weeks in the hospital over two different periods.

As for you can see, although I haven't done any coding recently, I have done quite a bit of utilities testing, and have found numerous helpfull utilities for file management and alternative desktop shells so I'm not stuck with the same old boring XP desktop!
In the Quake scene I see there is a final 1.0 release of EvQ3! I'll be anxious to ceck that out!

No you are not dreaming...back to back updates! :)

When I was trying to upload my last update, I found that the FTP client I had been using was just a demo, and had now expired. So, off I went in search of a freeware FTP client. I ended up finding Pablo Software Solutions, which has a very nice collection of freeware. This includes a couple different web and ftp servers, as well as various clients and other necessary internet based apps, as well as some standard utilities such as Pablo Commander, which is an updated version of Norton Commander, a utility I always found amazingly helpful.

On the games front, I recently fired up FuhQuake, just to run it for a little SP. I noticed it has the lights shining through walls bug. Since a lot of my ideas are MP focused, I'm thinking of using FuhQuake as the basis of a different project, so that you can get great performance for either SP or MP game play. just a thought at this stage.

I'm also going to look over some stuff with CleanQ3, and hopefully have a new version for upload soon.

3-28-07:

I finally got to where I've looked over the code. I managed to fix the last warning in CleanQ3 while compiling under MSVC++ 2003, so it now compiles with no warnings at all. It was a compiler setting which needed to be changed. The warning didn't affect the output executables, it just made compilation slower. Due to that, it hadn't been a big priority.

So I'm starting to look over the code some more, and see if there are any other tweaks I can make.

3-14-07:

OK, ok, ok....please bear with me here. :)

Unfortunately, I spent the last two weeks in the hospital, so I'm still trying to get going again. I'm very sorry for the additional delays.

2-23-07:

OK, still alive and kicking!

I'm at the point where I think I'll have some time to get back to looking over code. At present, I don't have specific plans, other than to go back over my projects.

In my travels I came across a very helpful utility...AB Commander, by WinAbility.com. It's sort of a Norton Commander for Windows, and provides a whole lot more functionality than the stock Explorer included with Windows. Check it out!

*tap..tap...tap* Is this thing on?

"Rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated.... " ;) (to quote Mark Twain)

I haven't been doing anything at all, I'm afraid, on any programming. At the moment, I do not have any specific plans. One thing I would like to do, is clean up the emboss mapping for OS X and get that released, but I don't have a time-frame for that.

I have been running WinXP pretty much exclusively on the MacBook. But for the last couple of days I've been going back to OS X, and I'm getting back to seeing what I liked about it (and didn't like for that matter). I plan on doing some more music recording, so I'm getting back familiar with Mac-ism key combinations.

9-11-06:

Ah....9/11. A terrible day in history.

I'm not going to say anything bad about Apple today. ;)

But on another rather semi-bizarre note, for the last 3 months I have been trying to work with a music software company to get a copy of an older version of their software. I had tried various legal reseller routes, and no one had the older versions I was looking for. So, I thought, "well, rather than buying used and not benefiting the company, perhaps since I'm a registered user of a newer version of the exact same app, they'll find a way to help me out". Not so fast. I have all but begged them to take my money for a copy of a previous version, but nooooooooo. So at this point, since I legally own the most recent version of the app, and have tried repeatedly to work with the company to legally acquire a prior version of the same app with no luck, I won't lose sleep if I find and use a cracked version.

9-6-06:

I may be working on a new mod/game project. I can't give any details yet, but it will be using the Quake 3 engine and code.

My disdain for Apple hasn't diminished any. I do think their OS is good, and by using their own hardware, they do have a level of stability that is hard for other formats to match. It would be nice to have an Apple machine on the side, but I'll never have it as my main machine. Running WinXP on the MacBook has worked fairly well. Matter of fact, many things run faster under WinXP than OS X. The biggest issues have been more related to the graphics card than anything else.
